#noJezebel: Celebrity, Sex, Forced Re-victimization for Women

persephonemag:

From the article:

To repost images of a victim’s rape without her permission — the last two images in the post are graphic, if blurred-out, screencaps that specifically depict the attack — is to deprive her of her dignity and her right to preserve her privacy. It victimizes her all over again. Her blurred-out body does not get to be sacrificed on the altar of “raising awareness of rape” or even “seeking justice for a rape victim”; to make it bait for pageviews under the guise of awareness-raising and seeking justice is disingenuous at best, a reification of rape culture at its worst — and, I suspect, at its heart. There is a difference between torture-porn and explicitly tying images to narratives detailing systemic abuses of power: the former seeks to shock for its own sake, the latter shocks in the service of exposing institutional corruption and large-scale moral failure. Further, as feminists, we all know how wrong it is to demand that oppressed or victimized people tell their stories in the service of our education; how, then, is it right to demand that a rape victim be victimized all over again for purposes about which neither the Jez author nor editor seem clear?

That the entire post sensationalizes rape for the sake of controversy, rather than for the sake of justice, is fairly clear from its structure and the justifications offered for its existence.

Your Aura is a Bit Splotchy: Synesthesia Revisited

persephonemag:

From the article:

For all the studying and research I’ve done about synesthesia over the years, I still find myself learning things I didn’t know before. Since writing my last article, I discovered that other aspects of my personality and behavior are likely part of my synesthesia, and I’ve also discovered something else — my synesthetic characteristics are still presenting themselves. They are seemingly growing. Since my last article, I’ve suddenly developed symptoms of the disorder that I never had before. You can imagine my surprise, since in all my research and study of the subject, I’d never heard that you can develop more symptoms well into adulthood. Apparently, if I’m any indication, you can.

If we operated by her standards of judgment, we could assume all Aussies were complete dicks because she is.

cell-of-my-heart:

Some highlights:

Her views on tipping:

Showing your appreciation for services rendered should not be automatically expected everywhere you go – it should be for wait staff who really do go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that you have a good meal.

Her views on eating at Hooters, her idea of “typical” American food:

Is there any food in America that isn’t loaded in calories?

After a week, we were so sick of the typical American lifestyle that we got to the point of having supermarket breakfasts (e.g. buying a piece of fruit and some yoghurt from a supermarket), sandwich lunches, and dinners at fancy restaurants where we would be guaranteed salad and food that wasn’t deep fried.

The magic continues in the comments where some people call her out for her ethnocentrism.

What I think of America is based on what I have experienced in a month. If I visit other areas, I might reevaluate. Until then, I hold what I have said as true to my experience and will happily ignore your attempts to invalidate my holiday experiences.

In response to Americans explaining that tipping is customary in order to make up for the fact that wait staff have traditionally lower wages because tips are (in theory) supposed to make up that difference and give waitstaff higher than average wages:

That’s the stupidest reason for keeping an ineffective system – “it’s part of our culture”. If we kept systems that don’t make sense because they were part of our culture, then women wouldn’t be able to vote, there would still be systematic segregation, children would still be working in factories, etc.

In response to being called out on comparing the American tipping system to segregation, child labor, and suffragists:

RE: tipping – how is it not similar? Not having a liveable minimum wage is essentially creating a system that leaves a secondary class of American people dependent on the wishes of others. Whether that be women, African-Americans or the service industry, a group of people are being kept downtrodden because of “this is our culture”.

Apparently, Americans are fat because we’re all poor. Curse you, Wall Street!

My net wealth is over $100K and I’m only 25. That says to me that half of all Americans are only earning $10K, $20K, $30K a year, and not being able to save much of it.

In response, the blogger attempts to save face with a post entitled Because I’m an Uncultured Tourist.

She promises us more blogging magic!

Tomorrow I am going to post photos of burgers, fries, and fat Americans because that is all I know of America.

Awesome, lady. Thanks to your logic that ALL Americans are fat* and only eat deep fried food at diners because that is what YOU chose to do on your month-long trip to the USA, I’m going to conclude that all Australians are assholes because that is the example you set for me.

Thanks, lady, for being a fabulous example of international travel. You managed to visit a country, shit on that country’s culture, and form some misinformed stereotypes.

Sorry, Australia.

*Ain’t nothin’ wrong that. I feel her tone is very judgmental about body size. That is not okay with me.

wearethe99percent:

I am 30 years old. I have a degree in religions and english and over 12 years experience as a clerical worker and professional writer. I was laid off in early 2010, only six months after having my son. My husband was laid off from a job he held for over a decade about six months ago. He’s lucky enough to draw unemployment, but that will end in December. Neither of us has health insurance. We can barely pay our bills and are often behind. We rely heavily on the $241 we get from food stamps, which barely stretches for two weeks with a hungry toddler to feed. We recently had to turn off our phone contract because we couldn’t afford the expensive bill. Just finding extra money to put gas in the car is a daily struggle.
We are the 99%!

The BBC will probably never show this again. Watch to see the extent of media lies, racism and the anger of youth.

This is the first post from a blog called I don’t like sluts. One of my followers alerted me to this, and I have tried to quietly take care of it myself, reporting them to tumblr, but that was a few days ago and so far no good.
What I’m asking is that you all report this blog too. It’s quite easy to do so, and we’ve shut down hateful and dehumanizing blogs like this in the past. All you have to do is send an email to support@tumblr.com. Include a link to the blog, and a quick explanation as to why this blog is problematic (ie. releasing of personal information, defamatory remarks, public harassment, cyber bullying). Don’t send messages to the makers of this blog, don’t give them the time of day. That will only fuel their fire. Just report, report, report. And then drink a banana smoothie, because you’ve earned it, champ.

What in the fuck?
Attention Dash, looks like we have a new project.

Omg, yeah we do
